Babies

Ed and I spoke to the Dr today. It’s the first time we’ve approached the subject of baby making with a health care professional. Ask all my friends and family and they will tell you I lack any kind of maternal prowess. I didn’t have any children around me when I grew up and just didn’t have any interest in holding a baby at a party, you’d always find me over by the food & booze, obvs 🥳. It might surprise you then that the night Ed had the accident one of the first things I cried to Ed’s step mum Sue was ‘I want his babies’ 😳. Yep, it was a shock to me too. Not an appropriate time to want the D.

.

Since that moment, at 25 years old, my mindset towards children changed somewhat. I think for a while I went the other way “I don’t even want children” & “we could have much more fulfilling lives without slaving away to kids”. Part of me does think that’s true and the other part thinks I was saying these things as a defence mechanism. Because ultimately if you don’t want something that’s outside of your control then you don’t get hurt if it’s not achieved. Fear of failure at its finest.

.

But, instead of pleading ignorant I finally researched SCI’s & fertility. Due to confused neural messaging the ejaculation and motility of the sperm are effected. Therefore, limiting our chances of conceiving naturally but definitely not impossible!

.

We are very early on in this journey. First step is to find out what our chances are with Ed’s sperm. From there we can at least know what is possible from his side. Just to be clear (mum) - this will not be happening for a good while! No way am I even pondering the idea of attempting to get pregnant whilst the world is set to reopen but we felt it was better to know now as this may affect how early we do start trying...if at all.

.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is that we don’t really know what our destiny is with children...but that’s ok. Going off the last 4 years we will be happy with whatever turn this journey takes ❤️

.

Would love to hear any advice from others on this journey 💫
